Del Ficke didn't
always see the
land the way he
does
today.
He grew up around it, worked it, and built a life in agriculture the way many are taught to—focused on output, efficiency, and doing what was expected. For years, it was simply the way things were done. But over time, something began to shift.
A lot of that shift traces back to his grandfather, Adolph Ficke.
A “barefoot naturalist,” Adolph understood the land not just as a resource, but as something alive, deeply intelligent and self-sustaining. He believed that nature, when left undisturbed, has an innate ability to restore and rebalance itself.
Those ideas stayed with Del, even before he fully acted on them.
A Turning Point
"One Sunday morning, standing in the pasture, everything became clear. It felt like a calling — one that couldn't be ignored.
Work with nature. Make the land better. Help others understand that it doesn't have to be this hard, or this destructive."
Del Ficke
That moment marked a turning point, setting a new direction for both his work and his life.
Rethinking the Way We Farm
A holistic, sensible,
and profitable approach.
Over the past several years, Del has transitioned his farming operation toward a more holistic, sensible, and profitable approach, one that is both modern and rooted in time-tested principles.
This shift included:
Moving away from chemical-dependent practices
Restoring soil to its more natural state
Converting cropland back into native pasture
Adopting regenerative and mob-grazing methods
The results have been clear: healthier land, more resilient systems, and improved profitability.
With more than 40 years of experience in agriculture, Del brings both depth and perspective to his work.
He is the creator of the Graze Master® composite cattle breed and has worked with thousands of farmers and ranchers across the United States and internationally. His approach is grounded in results, with a 99% success rate in helping agricultural businesses improve performance, whether through increased profitability or successful transitions to regenerative practices.
His work spans far beyond the field, combining hands-on experience with a broader understanding of systems, business, and sustainability.
For Del, this journey has become about more than agriculture.
It’s about recognizing the connection between land and life.
The way we treat the land reflects how we think, how we operate, and what we prioritize. When the land is out of balance, it often signals something deeper. And when it begins to heal, that restoration tends to extend beyond the soil.
This perspective continues to shape his work today.
Why Del Wrote
And Nature
Happened
In Del’s own words, “At a certain point, I felt the need to document what I was seeing, not just in farming, but in life.
The land around me was changing. Recovering. Thriving in ways I hadn’t seen before. I wanted to capture that honestly, through both photography and reflection.
That’s how And Nature Happened came to be.
It’s a glimpse into what’s possible when we step back and allow nature to do what it was designed to do.”
At the core of Del’s philosophy is a simple belief:
When we stop trying to control everything and start working with nature, better outcomes follow, for the land, for people, and for the future we’re shaping.
Because in restoring the land, we often find a way to restore something within ourselves too.
